How to Get Free Tickets to Concerts (5 ways)

 Marketing is huge when coming to concert touring and concert season is coming up as well as festival season so here is how you can get free tickets and it could be easier than you think...

1. Radio Giveaways

Social media, concert announcements, street team activities all have free ticket opportunities for multiple concerts. Social media, sometimes its random winners from their comment sections or calling into a number or chosen from a mailing list....Concert announcements have dozens of tickets given out per station. Hundreds of free tickets for the year per station....Also they have other free item giveaways and gifting stuff like purses and other promos and events too.....shoutout iHeartRadio... They also have meet and greets for up and coming acts as well as small performances as well....

2. Social Media Giveaways

The band gives away free tickets sometimes, sometimes the label gives out free tickets and sometimes there are partnerships with other companies too with ticket giveaways. Social media also has tons of promo codes out there too for discounts. Ticketmasters $25 ticket week is hugeeee don't forget that....Also Groupon is huge too....crazy discounts there...

3. Venue staff

Sometimes an usher manager sees a superfan and has tickets to upgrade whenever they like! Also managers in venues who are full time get free tickets to shows and if you're friends with them they have tickets to spare. They are working the concerts a lot of the time and sometimes going to a concert ends up feeling like work haha.

4. Know someone from Livenation

They are given 10 free shows a year I believe for employees and even though they are not like venue staff and don't work the shows, its always worth a shot for a free show...Livenation employs a million people it seems..

5. Know someone in the band or works with the band

Knowing a musician or video tech or dancer is huge, and you could be put on a guest list if they are close by you or you're willing to travel. You could get tickets, you could also head back stage too! tours are set aside a block of tickets per stop and release the extra if they don't need them!

Like beside putting in paperwork to being media or a photographer or actually applying to work at a venue there a lot of different options....Some sites have said using credit card points or volunteering at the event or looking for resellers...huge companies do send out influencers to free shows and stuff so that's a huge marketing plan people do. Similar to the Super Bowl, huge companies buy out skyboxes to fill with influencers to promote their business or coloration with their audience. Concerts, a company will buy out a box or floor seat to promote their business saying "thank you Pepsi for the free tickets to Billy Eilish". There are seat fillers for things like iHeartRadio Music Festival and stuff for live production stuff, unpaid I think on 1iota. Seatstir you pay a subscription tho....

Day in the Life of a Production Runner

What is a production runner?

~~~~As a runner, you'll act as a general assistant, working under the direction of the producer and other production staff to undertake whatever basic tasks are required to ensure the smooth running of the production process.~~~~~
A production runner runs errands, office stuff, food stuff, production stuff and we have cars too sometimes so we can bring people places and pick up and buy other things needed throughout the day. The fun thing about it is the days are very different everyday and keeps ya on your toes. But generally there are a number of similarities and tasks that you do for every touring crew.
 Have really been a production runner or two types of venues, one 3,000 cap venue, Terminal 5 and Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut 10,000 seat venue. The arena was half the size of MSG but in terms of acts we generally got acts very similar to them and TD Garden being a market right between the cities with being smaller and easier to fill out and a more intimate concert for the fans. There are no columns and no obstructed views.
The day typically starts with clocking in around 8am and introducing yourself to the backstage manager and saying hello to the other runners working the show. Write and exchange phone numbers with each other for the day, pick up the car keys for the day, typically 12 passenger sprinter vans, sometimes black suburbans or specific cars requested for the day. Check the gas, check the car for damage. In a perfect world, when the tour comes in, introducing yourself to the tour coordinator or tour manager depending on the size of show and see if they need anything at that moment.
 Usually  bringing bus drivers to their hotels is first. (Usually drivers are driving throughout the night and are basically nocturnal so bring them to the hotel in the AM so when the the concert starts they can be brought back to leave when it ends). If it is not busy help the backstage person set the rooms, furniture and stuff. Hotel keys for the band are usually acquired for the band, merch located to set up while trucks loaded in. Laundry is usually first with dry cleaning needed to be in if they want it day of for show, before noon, and crew laundry day of as well.
Bus stock is normally next, usually, a grocery list of things for the crew on the road as well as items not found on the hospitality riders. could be floated out $100s for the day and reflected for others. Throughout the day production, venue staff, as well as the promoters might also need things like grabbing office supplies, sending out fed ex packages, getting ticket counts, help set up meet and greet place like pipe and drape. Sometimes tech is needed so going to Shaboo Production LLC for tech rentals or guitar center. Oh also crews come in go throughout tours at times so bringing people and picking people up from the airport happens as well. Oh also send up the guest list to the box-office too. Oh also the artist might want to go shopping or go to the park or get their nails done.
Oh make sure you're eating throughout the day too. and don't get stressed out from the other departments setting up their stuff. Catering is usually there for breakfast, lunch and dinner if you have a minute. Oh also pick up the laundry if you're free then order the band dinner. Luckily, Mohegan Sun Arena is in the middle of a casino so there are options to just walk to for the band, not vegan or healthy really but for a crew dinner since they're so busy to eat too. Usually grab burgers, pizza, or sandwiches. Jerry mikes, Pepes, and Bobbys burgers or five guys are staples. The day usually ends with settlement after buying every food, alcohol, office stuff and other needs for the day. Make sure you keep your receipts. Oh also ice the buses. Sometimes you can catch the concert if it's not busy. End the day with just drive the crew members after their showers to their buses in the lot if they are a huge crew and can't all fit down stairs. make sure you return the keys after the night.
As a runner for Terminal 5 you sop for the same stuff it seems like but no car provided no buses or trucks felt with or hotels or transportation, seems strictly office supplies and hospitality.  Simple enough but you're on foot so don't forget to eat as well. The production manager usually tries to put in an order from the rider since the venue operates on a buy out and usually when you arrive, so does the food order. Anything not bought, like the arena, you go out and buy later but first stock the rooms before the band comes then introduce yourself to the tour manager and exchange numbers. the accountant, promoter rep gives out $1500 for the hospitality. if that runs ask what you want to buy/notbuy that fits the budget.
The tour might cover with their own petty cash. There could also be random task along the day as well while you're out. Set up water cases for stage. Also go bring the laundry and pick up the laundry when you're out, this is the table clothes, towels for crew and hand towels for band. At the end of the day you grab them all for the next laundry. Make sure you eat since there is no catering and keep your receipt for the end of the day. Ice the buses too after you grab the band and crew dinner, pizza usually.
Settlement is different if no buy out happened. Separate your receipts promoter (office supplies), and budget (food delivery and groceries and liquor) If buy out happened, ask the number of crew, divide the surplus, tour manager signs and you're all set. Once the tour manager releases you, you should be all set, the hospitality coordinator cleans up the rooms for the next day, towels, food, resets rooms and throw out stuff.
How Do Artists Find Their Sound?
 Artist like Twenty One Pilots Billy Eilish and other top of the bill artists have a seemingly such an individual sound and it has to be tough to evolve overtime musicwise. Fans are huge in terms of merchandise being bought, concert touring sizes, meet and greets, and album packages. There's a huge amount of opportunity for engagement with fans.
And music trends in general have changed over time in how people consume music and how new fans are being introduced to music. People used to physically pass out CDs with their music and now it's streaming. Like radio used to individually select songs for the radio and a lot are more playlists and prerecorded filler. In terms of TV like it feels like it was huge to be on Disney or Nick, like a Britney or Justin Timberlake or Christina Aguilera, Ryan Rosling. and become a massive star and maybe still is with people like Jenna Ortega, Olivia Rodrigo, and Sabrina Carpenter and Dove Cameron.
Before then in terms of pop music, the boy bands from singing competitions. Not just boy bands but individual acts. Daughtry, One Direction, Little Mix, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood, But it feels like the new child stars are social media stars originally  Netflix and HBO are in and Cable is out. Retro is back though for music, like Record players are in still, CDs are sort of out, cassettes too, radio is out, but SiriusXM Spotify, Apple Music are all in.
Like how do artists make money now and stand the test of time? Streaming doesn't pay from what I hear. Through Merch, fans, ticketing, meet and greets, producing credits? Once you build an audience how do you stay relevant? How to you build an audience?
a crowd of people watching a woman on a stage
In terms of famous people, like you can see who is "famous" by who gets invited to sit courtside at basketball games. What is famous the the older demographics are ex-sports players, or musicians or comedians, now it feels digital with TikTokers.
If you think of it in terms of comedy, comedians used to work at open mics and work their way up but now social media famous people can go and get immediately booked with their built in audience. Businesswise it seems better, and more secure way of making money knowing people have a social audience regardless of being vouched for or building a personal reputation.
 It has to be tough for older and younger acts to be booked together on a bill because of the new category being added in. It used to be the best safe comedy act, the best edgy comedy act, the best nostalgia, the best girl, the best guy, now it involves the best YouTubers, the best actors, the best tiktokers, the best musicians, the best TV comedian, the best comedy writer, the best diverse act etc. It has to be so easy as a booker business wise but tough on the individuals using the old school path and aren't getting the social push.
All that has to translate toward music as well right? This is across the board in entertainment music, movies/TV, social media, sports, radio, video games, comedy. Everything did trend toward online since the smart phone but the shutdown and covid expedited  everything faster. And things are slowly balancing out now but I also feel incredibly removed from social media trends.
You'll see similar trends and social media strategies across the many mediums as well such as F1 driving with fan pages similarly marketed like boybands like one direction or before that Tik Tok creator houses or before that was the YouTubers which got over saturated. The NFLxTaylor Swift cross over was huge financially for everyone. The NFL of course has the history and dedicated male audience but Taylor Swift brought a fandom that bought mercy, brought engagement, and the fans brought a huge amount of free press. There's a reason WAGS are known for sports fandom because you're giving an inside into your favorite players that men don't care for generally besides them being hot but wives do love seeing their livestyle, and reality shows. You can see what people wear, what their family and friends are like and feel like you're involved as a fan.
Social media has been the new word of mouth forever and the past few years were Tik Tokers trend has moved to building out podcasts to live event podcasts and live streaming has been huge this whole time since before covid. There would be fan compilations, fan pages, for anything.
And I'm such other companies are utilizing these trends as well with advertising like clothes, sports but you need a leader/personality to bring a new fanbase in for ad deals or commercials. Businesswise, it should feel easier to get a sense of a personalities by the public analytics like follows likes and engagement. exaggeratedly like famous actors and comedians are in Super Bowl commercials, walking in fashion shows and other collaborations.
So how do artist find their sound? how do media personalities find their sound because realistically, you could just chase the trends and make money from the highest bidder. Content turnaround time is tough with timing everything so ultimately you just have to have a loyal fanbase. It's good to find new avenues and try new things and also sample and cover artists.
It has to be tough though with newer acts trying to be like an artist like Twenty One Pilots cuz acts like NF, Blackbear, and AJR all have very similar sounds vocally as well as production wise as well. They all seem like a fusion of a white guy rapping, electronic introspective distopian backtracks. NF focuses more on the rapping lyrically it seems like for some songs where others are so similar. Blackbear seems to be more poppy/angsty, and AJR has more melodies and poppy.
 It this interview the singer Tyler Joseph said the two of them focuses more on them and don't really notice similarity that a consume might. They said jokingly they feel flattered by the question of others copying them. He said later it's great that other artists have the freedom to write whatever they want to. And that's a great way to thing of anything creative. It is incredibly easy to get competitive and negative about the process but there is a choice in doing whatever you want as an artist.
Alt 2023 Personal Favorite
black tablet computer beside round white portable speaker
 Pulling from both media base metrics from WMRQ throughout the year, and comparing them to the Amazon Music top 50 Alt list, below are some of my favorite. Now I am not on TikTok so I do not have that influence but of course a lot of viral songs do transfer over to chart toppers which I could pick coincidentally. Below are songs from Amazon that I loved on WMRQ and another post will be my favorite songs from the radio strictly from media base data.
A nice top 17 here. Just to note, some of the bands I loved from iHeart and didn't see the band until their Alter Ego show. I love Phoenix now and Beach Weather. and Lovelytheband from this years Alter ego, everyone knows their song Broken and this year Sail Away was perfect too.
Depeche Mode, Death Cab For Cuties and MÃ¥neskin all had hauntingly sad songs which I loved, Eat Your Young, catchy song, strange concept for music video as well but catchy. The Beaches and Cold War Kids had poppy catchy songs, Same with Out of My Mind, and Emergency Contact.
Surefire I loved loved loved and wished was on my Spotify wrap for 2023 but it was mainly iPrevail and Fall out Boy.  Just Pretend was a great alt classic in the making I feel, can't wait to hear more from them. also wish sleep token was on here too, although that might be considered straight rock.
Lost by Linkin Park was huge this year, had it on replay for every gym session. grew Up with Linking Park and was a great homage to the early years of the band. Living in a Haze was a great song too. Boy genius was good and sad and Lovejoy was a great indie rock.
Wilderado, Linkin Park, and MÃ¥neskin might be my top 3 of the year. I will check media base another post but from Amazon top 50 Alt. Depeche Mode and Deathcab for Cuties to round out top 5.
Alt Music Top 15 2023
 Alt music played either on Octane on siriusxm or Spotify or apple streaming are huge. Radio play is and always has been tough to break into for artists due to song allocation on air with commercials, new music, classic music and other B-role interview/side chat radio host duties. Below are Apples top 15 songs from 2023 but I'll also include my personal favorite from the radio play where I find music from Mediabase.
Where do you listen to music? How do you find music? At the gym or shopping at the mall? At the grocery store it's usually top hits or throwbacks but word of mouth nows seems to strictly through social media Mainly Tik Tok blowing up so many artists and songs over Covid. As much as things seemed slower, it was a great time to try and learn new things.
A few edits I would make would be to take out Billie Eilish. She seems entirely to pop driven in this track to be considered alt but some of her old tracks do seem also so who knows. Dial Drunk was huge this year and I almost thought a huge country song all the time but maybe labeled more folksy.
But other huge acts like Teddy Swims and Post Malone and even Zach Bryan all were huge this year and had similar sounds. Oh and Jelly Roll. Jelly Roll seems more alt than Noah Kahan to me.
My favorite that I would highlight in this Apple Music top 50 Alt Songs of 2023 are below. Also not included from radio hits too. A little bit more grunge and more emo which I love. excited about the hits shown for 2024. Loved the song crying in the shower, I wish it was on this list, maybe it was only played on the radio...I thought other songs on the list were more 2024 alt songs like Blame Brett, and even Billy Eilish, Yes I'm a Mess, Other songs on the list I either didn't know of or didn't love this year/didn't make a huge impact for me.
I'll make a 2024 list again for Alt so far and see if any other songs are break outs right now before touring season, the summer and spring. Already a quarter of the year has gone by so we will see what stands out right now....
Looking at the alt list right now the top songs are all too pop Billie Eilish What was I made for, Taylor Swift Willow, Stick Season Noah Kahan, Duo End of Beginning which I don't love, its like a soft rock song, kind of melancholy alt, and Hozier Too Sweet which I don't know at all. I wish show the media base metrics in another post
Alt Music 2024 So Far
white and black iPad
First Here is some data that I love to get from media base. This is a list of the labels represented on air and the count of tracks over the past two days. Next is going to be the count of songs throughout the two days. Next the chart is going to be my personal favorite over the two days.
So I go to MediaBase and look up my home town WMRQ Radio Station for a collection of alt throwbacks, feel goods, and up and coming tunes and picked my favorite top songs they stream. I'll also throw on Alt now on Spotify or Octane on Sirius or just any play lists to find something different.
I love discovering new artists and bands. And right before summer is perfect time for it before all these bands begin all their tours. Here's just some that I love!
This is just a list of the different labels of the artists, my favorites and the top played songs!
